6 unique places to run a marathon

We live in an era where there are more and more races and more massive ones. Some runners,  prefer to get out of the ordinary and live a transformative running experience, in which the participant feels that he is living something unique and special.

Kilimanjaro (Tanzania)

It is the roof of Africa at 5895m above sea level and one of the most iconic places on this continent. Located close to the Equator, from space you can see the color changes of each of its bioclimatic floors… cultivation, rain forest, moorland, high desert… and snow in the top.

The Kilimanjaro is considered the largest self-sustaining mountain in the world as it starts from almost sea level to near 6000m, without being supported by any mountain range.
It is also a protected Natural Park and its slopes are home to the famous Masaais, semi-nomadic shepherds who travel with their flocks from which they take advantage of all their resources.
If you run the Kilimasai Marathon you will have the privilege of running within the Kilimanjaro Natural Park, from 1900m high to 3500m high. You will be able to see its perpetual snows, descend to its foothills and receive your finisher medal from the Masaai. You will enjoy a night barbecue, watching the stars and sleep in their village. The next day you can visit a safari in Ngorongoro or Tangarire where you will see lions, zebras, elephants, giraffes or buffalos.

Machu Picchu (Peru)

Recognized as one of the 8 wonders of the world, Machu Picchu is the ultimate expression of Inca culture.
The enigmatic city that was hidden and that the conquerors of the new world never found. If you have the privilege of visiting it, you realize that it is one of the most wonderful places on the planet for its beauty, its extraordinary location and the art and perfection with which the Incas built it.

Only a few privileged people have run the Inca Marathon Peru, visiting not only Machu Pichu but other Inca enclaves such as Victos, Vilcambamba, Ollantaytambo, Sacsahuaman or Cuzco and finishing in the hot springs of Cocalmayo, a unique place for a unique marathon.

Lapland (Finland)

If we talk about extraordinary places we cannot skip the village of Santa Claus, right on the Arctic Circle.
This beautiful town is located in the heart of Lapland, in the middle of the Finnish Taiga. A place of pristine and wild nature but close to the city of Rovaniemi and only 3km from its small airport.

There you can run an exclusive marathon… the Arctic Marathon Finland, in which Santa Claus himself will give you the start and dine with us at the trophy presentation ceremony. You will start and finish on the same line of the Arctic Circle, you will enjoy a route of huskies pulled by sleds, watching the Northern Lights, and all staying in cozy typical Lappish wooden houses, with their sauna, and includes all transfers, meals and activities, which is why it is an exclusive marathon.

Sahara Desert, Morocco

Few places can transmit as much tranquility, exoticism and peace as the deserts. They are places for meditation, for finding oneself and progressing as a person.
The dune of Merzouga is a special place, it is at the gateway to the great Sahara but still accessible, with hotels and infrastructure. A place where you can taste the most authentic of the desert nomads and enjoy the culture and healthy Berber cuisine.

Is there anything more romantic than a camel tour to see the sunset?
Precisely there, on the golden dune of Merzouga, Wildmarathon organizes the Dune Marathon, surrounding this great dune running on the hammada, a flat and fast surface, suitable for running. During the race you can observe the dune and the camel caravans and at the finish line, enjoy an exclusive picnic, a barbecue and a night in luxury tents.
Are you tempted by the idea? There are trains that only pass once.

The Annapurnas (Nepal)

Considered one of the most beautiful treks in the world, the Annapurnas circuit is a spectacular circuit surrounded by
eight-thousander peaks, where the landscape changes constantly as we ascend, from semi-tropical rice fields to snow-capped peaks, passing through deciduous forests, alpine forests and tundra meadows, crossing Tibetan bridges and picturesque villages with monasteries and stupas overlooking the valleys.
And right there, at 4000m above sea level and starting at a Tibetan Monastery, there is a unique marathon: the Yeti Marathon Nepal.

Imagine yourself running on a gentle descent, between alpine forests, surrounded by immense peaks and when you reach the finish line, the Tibetan monks present you with your finisher’s medal.
Additionally, in this 12-day all-inclusive program, you can climb Pisang Peak, at 6150m. Without a doubt, an experience to live once in a lifetime.

Cozumel Island (Mexico)

This paradisiacal Caribbean island is home to the second largest coral reef in the world. It is a sanctuary for sea turtles, starfish, seahorses, and many other species.
Beaches of fine white sand and luxury hotels surrounded by jungle where Mayan vestiges are hidden.

An unrivaled place to run a race like the Maya Marathon, an event that crosses the island from North to South, with incredible views of its coasts and Mayan warriors cheering you on at the finish line with their mystical rituals.
And to celebrate? 5***** all-inclusive hotels, private snorkeling tour, and a visit to Mayan ruins and the Parque Sur Wild Sanctuary.

There are hundreds of mountain, asphalt, city or country marathons, but very few are as authentic as those we have mentioned, which is why they are designed for small groups, tailored to their needs, with a 24/7 guide and everything included, so that they are conceived as incomparable experiences.

From Wildmarathon, our mission is to offer transformative running experiences, in which the participant feels that he is living something unique. That’s why we call  them, “unique marathons”.
