Celebrate with them that you are a Kilimasai finisher
In the Kilimasai Marathon we will have the opportunity to live with the Masai people. They will be the protagonists of some relevant events on our trip that we will explain later, but we are going to learn some interesting facts about this amazing people known throughout the world thanks to their ancestral customs, their dances and the link they have with the land and animals.
Some Curiosities:
.-The Masai people are a tribe from East Africa that today lives in southern Kenya and northern Tanzania.
.-They migrated from north to south following the Nile River between the 16th and 17th centuries AD and prospered thanks to their skill in herding, and their height and endurance.
.-They live by and for herding. This ancient African tribe of warriors is today semi-nomadic shepherds, always looking for pastures for their cattle, where they obtain milk, blood, skins and excrement to cover their huts.
.-The health of the people depends on the strength of their animals, which they consider sacred.[/caption]
.-Their diet is based mainly on milk, butter, blood, honey and meat. They cannot drink milk and blood at the same time because they are forbidden to eat both a living and a dead animal at the same time.
.-The more cattle they have, the more status, power and wealth they have, and this fact is very relevant in their culture and makes it easier to choose when it comes to marriage.
.-The villages of the Masai tribe are a group of small houses that they call manyatas, made of adobe and dung. They are closed in a circular shape to avoid attacks by wild animals such as leopards, lions or hyenas and to prevent the cattle from escaping.
.-Their society is made up of three groups according to age (children, adolescents, adults) and there are 4 vital phases that all men of the tribe go through, passing through child, minor warrior, major warrior and adult.
.-As they overcome one of these stages, they move on to the next, assuming more responsibility and rights. They are also divided into clans, where there are heads of families and elders, who are politically or religiously responsible, and are in charge of making important decisions for the tribe in an equal manner.
.-Initially they were polytheists but later they mostly embraced Christianity, and also Islam.
.-Their daily life is full of ceremonies. From births to marriages, which are arranged by families when they are young. Although it is true that polygamy is a common practice in the Masai tribe and they are allowed to have relations with young warriors before marriage.
.-They do not use instruments in any of their ceremonies. The powerful voices of the tribe serve as music and in their dances they compete to see who jumps the highest.
A real experience.
In the Kilimasai Marathon, the Masai will give us trophies and medals while entertaining us with their dances and jumps. Afterwards they will offer us a barbecue with their best meats, they will show us what their daily life is like and we will enjoy their exploits and adventures around a campfire before going to sleep at their ranch.
